DHAKA, 13 March 2005 — The situation along the Indo-Bangladesh border remained calm for the last two days as the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) halted fencing the border flouting 1975 border guidelines, officials of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) said in Dhaka yesterday.
Meanwhile, Indian constable Soma Munde, 35, arrested for his intrusion into and alleged espionage in Bangladesh, is being sent to Dhaka for interrogation by Interpol. Residents of Singmari in Lalmonirhat district had caught him with a self-loaded rifle (SLR) on Thursday. Preliminary interrogation by police found a network working inside Banglkadsh to carry out bomb attacks.
Earlier, a Lalmonirhat court ordered the suspected Indian spy to jail pending investigations and trial.
After his arrest Munde told police interrogators that a BSF battalion commander had sent him to Bangladesh territory to gather BDR intelligence.
The cease-fire at Singmari border took hold after a telephone conversation between Rangpur BDR Sector Commander Col. Lutfar Rahman and acting Kuchbihar BSF Sector Commander P.K. Tripathi.
The situation at Ramgarh Khagrachhari district has also remained calm.
Separate company commander level meetings between BDR and BSF were held at Mahimaganj in Kurigram and Ramgarh.
During the meetings, field level border officials of Bangladesh and India agreed to maintain the peace along the border till the deputy director general level meeting between BDR and BSF is held tomorrow.
The meetings were held to ease the tension following India’s recent move to fence the border that led to exchange of fire between BDR and BSF on Wednesday.
