JEDDAH, 22 March 2005 — In an incident described as first of its kind, a Saudi security guard working for a security company stole over SR3 million yesterday in a daring daylight heist. The robbery was planned and executed during an early money drop to National Commercial Bank’s Khaled ibn Waleed Street branch.
According to a police source, while three security guards, traveling on an armored van, were on their way to drop the money at the bank one of the guards ran away with some moneybags that contained over SR3 million. The runaway guard, who was said to be in his late 20s, was apprehended in the afternoon in the southeast of Jeddah after a massive police hunt.
The guard is under interrogation.
NCB preferred not to comment on the incident as it happened outside the bank’s premises and said that the case was in the hands of the security company and therefore it was their problem to solve.
Under the Shariah, the punishment for robbery is amputation of the hand.
