DHAKA, 25 March 2005 — Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday overcame rains and inclement weather to visit Gaibandha district to take stock of the relief operations at the worst-affected tornado-hit villages as the toll of the tropical storm that swept the country was put at 55.
She assured the affected people of her government’s support. She said the army already deployed in the affected areas will distribute relief supplies.
“You’re not alone, you are not friendless. The government and the BNP has always been with you and will be with you at the time of your distress,” she told the victims of natural disaster in Naldanga and Sadullapur sub-districts.
Despite drizzles, she distributed cash, corrugated iron sheets, lungis (men’s wear) and saris among the distressed men, women and children in Naldanga Union of Sadullapur sub-district and at Anandabazar in Sarbananda Union of Sundarganj sub-district.
“Today I have come to you to share your sorrows and express my heartfelt sympathy,” she said, adding that BNP senior Joint Secretary-General Tarique Rahman too visited other places and distributed relief.
State Minister for Culture Selima Rahman and Jatiya Party leaders Roushan Ershad, MP, and Dr. Fazle Rabbi, MP, also addressed the crowds at Naldanga.
At least 55 people were killed and 1,200 injured in last Sunday’s violent tornado that left a trail of devastation. According to initial estimate, the inhabitants of the area suffered a financial loss of about 12 million taka in damaged crops and property.
Food and Disaster Management Minister Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Alamgir Kabir and Deputy Minister for Food and Disaster Management Asadul Habib Dulu accompanied the prime minister.
