PUNE, 7 April 2005 — An angry mob of more than 2,000 Shiv Sena activists went on the rampage, throwing stones and setting fires in Mohol town in Solapur district, following the abduction and murder of Kamlakar Deshmukh, a local Shiv Sena leader on Tuesday evening. Three people were arrested.
Police reinforcements were rushed from here to bring the situation under control as opposition parties created an uproar in the legislative assembly over Deshmukh’s murder.
Despite the home minister’s assurance to have the incident probed by the Criminal Investigations Department, the opposition continued to protest, disrupting the proceedings.
When the house assembled again, the opposition tried to raise the issue again, and failing to get any attention from the government, it boycotted the house for the day.
According to police sources, Deshmukh, who has a sugar cane juice shop near Court Road in Mohol, was returning home from his shop on Tuesday, when he was kidnapped and later killed by the assailants. The body of the deceased was later in the evening found dumped near a shopping center.
Deshmukh had aggressively campaigned against the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) during the last legislative assembly elections, and also his wife Vijaya had fought against the NCP candidate in the local bodies bye-elections.
Tension has since then been prevailing in the town, resulting in the murder of Deshmukh yesterday.
