I receive many letters from people who have long-standing weight problems and who want to lose a lot of weight. I really feel that what many of the letters have in common is that they are from really super, giving, caring people. Nurturing ladies who have a lot to give others, but with no time to have their own needs met. They spend so much time thinking of others that there is not the time or space for their own emotional needs. If you think you fall into this category, here are some things to think about.
Fill the Void
Try to ask yourself why you overeat.
Is it boredom or depression?
When did it start - in childhood?
Was there a trauma in childhood or a family divorce that started you on a path to comfort eating?
Is there no time or place in your life for your own emotional needs?
Any of these can cause a void and comfort eating sometimes fills this void. When you realise the reason why you overeat, then you can take simple steps towards finding what you want from life and move forward to a more positive, healthy and fitter you.
Attitude to Food
If you have been dieting and remain overweight for some time, you can develop an unhealthy attitude towards food. Food becomes an enemy and every day becomes a battle with food. Instead of eating for hunger and good health, you start to eat out of boredom, depression or to comfort yourself. Everyone does this to a degree. So, think about your life. Why do you overeat? Do you need to change things in your life? List what you want to achieve in life and take little steps towards achieving them each day. For example: If you have a void in your life, sort it out and don't fill up on food.
Accept the Fact
You are eating more food than your body needs for repair and energy. That is why the excess food is being stored in your body as fat. So, that is why you need to eat less and exercise more! Take time to think why you eat for comfort and then take time for yourself. Remember things that used to bring you joy and put them back in your life.
You Can Enjoy Your Food
Food is one of life's pleasures and everyone has a right to enjoy the taste and to enjoy meals with friends. Don't feel guilty if you go out for a meal with friends. Enjoy it!
Tip of the Week
If you're trying to cut down on your food intake, try using smaller dishes. This will force you to serve smaller portions, which in turn equals fewer calories.
Recipe of the week -
Chicken Raghu with Tomatoes and Olives
Serves 6
Method
1 tbsp olive oil
1 kg boneless skinless chicken breast halves, cut into 2.5 cm cubes
55 g all purpose flour
1 tbsp tarragon, or 20 g fresh
530 g Italian style peeled tomatoes, drained and chopped
1 tsp. orange zest, minced
360 ml chicken stock
160 g pitted green olives
10 g parsley, minced
Method
Heat oil in a heavy non-stick skillet over medium high heat. Dust chicken lightly with flour, shaking off excess. Sauté chicken 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown. Stir in next 4 ingredients, salt, and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer 45-50 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding additional water if stew becomes too thick. Stir in olives, sprinkle with parsley and serve.
Exercise Tip
Home Exercise Space
When exercising at home, be sure to set aside space that is quiet and private. You will not be able to concentrate on exercising if there are too many distractions. Turn off the telephone and ask others not to bother you. Exercise time is your time. Treat it that way!

I am 5' 2" and weigh 78 kilos. I have 2 children and I visit my sick mother at weekends. I help at my son's school hearing readers and helping with activities. I am very busy, I am too tired to exercise and I eat very little during the day - but I tend to binge in the evenings. I am depressed about my size and concerned about my health. Veronica
