GUWAHATI, 11 April 2005 — With assembly polls due early next year, the incumbent Congress government in Assam yesterday set the election wheels in motion by holding a massive public rally that focused on taking the government to the villages.
There are indications that Congress could set an early date for elections sometime at the end of this year.
More than 50,000 Congress supporters were at the rally here that was named ‘March to the village’.
“Let us all take a pledge today to work with our heart and soul to change the face of rural Assam and bring all round development in the state,” Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told the rally.
“We are sure the people of Assam will give us another chance in the coming elections if we are sincere in our efforts.”
The Congress is under tremendous pressure as its five-year tenure nears an end with militants wreaking havoc across the state.
