CAIRO, 21 April 2005 — The announcement of the Egyptian Broadcasting Network that Lebanese singer Nancy Ajram has been chosen to be the sole singer performing at the annual spring festival Sham Al Naseem, has created an outbreak of chaos. The opposition to the decision was mainly over the widely held opinion that there are many Egyptian singers who should be given the opportunity to perform at the festival — for example prominent singer Hani Shaker and others — who had not performed for the network in over five years.
Officials at the Egyptian network justified their decision by stressing that Nancy has become more popular in Egypt than most other Egyptian singers. The administration refused to cancel Nancy’s performance or replacing her, expecting that her concert will prove to be very successful.
Despite Nancy’s recent comments that she is on excellent terms with her sister Nadine and will support her one hundred percent in any career decision she make, close sources to the singer revealed otherwise. It had been revealed that there was a rift between the two sisters a and that Nadine had bragged that she was more popular than her sister Nancy.
Nadine said on her personal website that she will be the queen of music videos and the bombshell of Lebanon for the year 2005. Nadine added that she will be so popular that the soft drink company Coca Cola will break their contract with her sister and sign one with her instead.
Nancy stressed that she does not believe any of these comments were made by her sister and will not waste time to listen to them. She added that people are trying to create friction between her and Nadine.
