NEW DELHI, 26 April 2005 — UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived here yesterday for a four-day official visit during which New Delhi is expected to press its case for a permanent UN Security Council seat.
Annan was received at the airport by External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh.
The secretary-general will attend several UN programs today and his official engagements begin tomorrow when he meets President Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, External Affairs Minister Natwar and opposition leader Sonia Gandhi, an official release said.
In the evening, Annan would attend a round table on HIV AIDS.
India is among the leading aspirants for a permanent seat on the Security Council, saying it deserves a spot in light of its billion-plus population and growing economic clout. New Delhi is expected to use the visit to press its case.
