DHAKA, 27 April 2005 — The Bangladesh Bar Council, the regulatory body for lawyers, has canceled the license of High Court additional judge Faisal Mahmud Fayezee on charges he obtained his license to practice law by producing fake LLB degree and also for providing false information about his date of birth.
The council, at its meeting in Dhaka, also decided to file a criminal case against Fayezee. On Nov. 4, 2004, the council had served a notice on Fayezee asking him to explain why appropriate legal action would not be taken against him for obtaining his enrolment certificate by producing forged documents.
The council said Fayezee had filed an application for the license in 1990 after it was known that he had doctored his LLB results. An inquiry committee and a syndicate of the Chittagong University in 1989 in its findings reported that Fayezee had doctored the degree.
The notice also said that Fayezee mentioned he was born in 1965, although he was actually born in 1963.
“It is forgery”, Rokanuddin Mahmud, vice chairman of the bar council, told reporters in Dhaka yesterday.
The council also criticized the chief justice for re-instating Fayezee on the High Court bench after the bar council began proceedings against the judge.
The council urged the Chief Justice to withdraw Fayezee from the bench and said the bar council would take action including boycotting courts.
