JavaMania has released a program for GSM mobile phones called SimWatcher that sends out an SMS message when someone replaces the SIM card in the phone. If the handset is stolen this is a chance to find out the number of the thief and perhaps get the phone back.
SimWatcher is easily installable on almost every type of GSM phone. Download SimWatcher using the phone’s WAP browser or send it from any desktop PC to the phone via Bluetooth or IRDA. The application runs in the background of the handset and costs 10 euros. The software doesn’t ensure that the phone will be returned, but it does enable the opportunity to cut a deal with the thief or report the theft to the police.
The application is at http://www.javamania.nl/javamania/toestelselectie.php?simplecode=90000337. The site is a little strange. Most of the information there is partly in English and partly in Dutch, but by using some brainpower, it’s manageable.
