I believe that a government intervention is urgently needed in order to solve the problem of women in dire need of assistance. They aren’t lying. They’re widowed, abandoned or divorced. Many of them have no roof over their heads, no extra clothing, nothing to eat. They have no way of protecting themselves or their children from the mean streets.
Some cases get reported in the press, and they receive necessary attention and care, as well as financial assistance from generous people. But is this enough?
The ministries of social affairs and labor ought to review their agenda and find a solution to the poverty that disproportionably affects women and children. We shouldn’t address the problem like a charity organization, but rather like a public institution that protects these fractured families.
We live in a rich country that has the means to support these poor people in a way that protects their dignity. These single women should be incorporated into the social security system. The government should work to help protect these women, because not doing so has its social costs.
Yes, some people misuse the social security system. If it were carefully monitored then these problems would not exist.
I feel terribly sorry for these poor women going from one place to the next in the desperate search for help that may not arrive. The Social Affairs Ministry should create an office to field these cases. This doesn’t mean just doling out financial assistance that might be squandered. What the ministry should do is help these women find work so that they retain their dignity.
