ISLAMABAD, 21 January 2006 — Sen. Amanullah Kanrani, a close associate of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti and senior member of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP), tabled an adjournment motion in the Senate yesterday when it began its winter session.
The lawmaker demanded an exhaustive debate on the situation in the western province of Balochistan and called for a halt to the ongoing military action there.
The leader of the house, Sen. Wasim Sajjad, said: “The government is taking action against only those tribesmen of Balochistan who not only disrupt the course of reforms in the province but sabotage developmental activities.” He wanted to know “who is firing the rockets and using sophisticated weapons.”
Sen. Sajjad told the house that a few tribesmen were attacking oil and gas installations to paralyze the national economy.
Sen. Kanrani wanted to press the motion when the house was adjourned to meet again on Monday.
Opposition members wanted to table a number of motions on the situation in Bajaur and Waziristan but it being a Friday, Senate Chairman Muhammad Mian Soomro adjourned the house.
