NEW DELHI, 27 February 2006 — Public outrage is building up across the country over the acquittal of the accused in the Jessica Lal murder case.

Late on Saturday evening, many residents of the capital came together at the Tamarind Court restaurant, where Lal had been shot dead. People lit candles to express their support for the victim.

“We have to understand why witnesses have turned hostile. It is out of fear and fatigue. There is also a lack of trust in the police in charge of the case,” said actor Rahul Bose.

“It is frightening to see a murderer walk away from the court when everyone knows he killed the woman,” said filmmaker Aparna Sen.
