ISLAMABAD, 28 February 2006 — Pakistan welcomed US President George W. Bush’s plan to push for a peace agreement on Kashmir when he visits New Delhi and Islamabad this week, a Foreign Ministry official said yesterday.
Bush said he would use his visit to New Delhi and Islamabad “to urge the leadership to continue solving this issue with the idea that it can be solved,” state-owned Pakistan Television reported Sunday.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said Bush’s approach was welcome and consistent with his recently stated policy.
“We do encourage and appreciate the international community’s engagement with Pakistan and India on Kashmir,” she told reporters here. “The US has been, in a way, engaged in this process.”
Musharraf Summons Session of National Security Council
In view of the growing unrest in Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has summoned a meeting of the National Security Council on March 1.
Officials said the secretary of the NSC Tariq Aziz will give away an overall review of the security and political situation in the country.
