JEDDAH, 3 March 2006 — In an ongoing drive to promote the culture and diversity of Jeddah, city officials are planning the launch of five multilingual, mobile exhibitions that can be set up and moved to various locations throughout Jeddah.
Head of Jeddah’s Tourism and Culture Department, Sami Nawar, told Arab News on Tuesday that the mobile exhibitions would be in Arabic, English and French and will be set up at schools, shopping centers, and other places where people congregate. The mobile exhibitions will contain multimedia presentations and printed materials. Nawar said that they have started contacting consulates in Jeddah to arrange for cultural exhibitions.
“We need to create a better understanding by knowing the culture of the various communities who reside in Jeddah,” he said.
Nawar added that they are working on a new museum in Jeddah’s historic center that would exhibit the cultural lifestyle of old Jeddah. The new museum would be complete in a few months, he said.
The King Adul Aziz Museum in Ubrug Al-Raghama area, east of Madinah Ring Road, is now open for public and the Naseef House museum in downtown is undergoing major renovations.
There are about 12 local and private museums in Jeddah, said Nawar. “Within the next five years, the number of Jeddah museums would double,” he said.
