NEW DELHI, 13 March 2006 — In yet another sign of just how unsafe it is to live in New Delhi, a mother and her daughter were found murdered in the posh Siddharth Enclave area of the capital.
Both were practicing lawyers at the Delhi High Court.
Police said they suspect the victims knew the murderers as there were no signs of a forced entry into the house.
The hands and legs of Swarna Mahajan, 55, and Anuradha Mahajan, 30, were tied with cloth, the police said.
The bodies of Mahajans were found when the maid visited their house in the morning, police said.
“They were not opening their door so with the help of a neighbor, the maid opened the door and found them dead. Preliminary investigations reveal that the killer might be known to them.
“The housemaid had seen two people who had come to meet the women on Saturday evening. We are taking her help to find out more about them,” said Anil Shukla, additional deputy commissioner of police.
“We expect to find the names of the people who had visited them from the list of visitors maintained by the gatekeeper at the main entrance gate of the colony. But we found no names as the killers did not make an entry,” he said.
Police also suspect the involvement of more than two people in the crime.
“The house could have been ransacked to divert police attention and to portray as if the cause of the murder was robbery,” said Shukla.
Personal or professional enmity could also be a cause for the crime, officials said, adding that forensic experts have been called in to check for clues and fingerprints.
