KARACHI, 15 March 2006 — The shortage of power in the port city of Karachi and adjacent areas will be a thing of the past soon as the government has decided to construct two power plants in the city, a top official said here yesterday.
The chairman of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Parvez Butt, said, “Two more nuclear power plants will be set up in the city to cater the growing energy requirements.
These nuclear power plants will be of 600 megawatt capacity each and will be set up near Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (Kanupp).”
Parvez said the PAEC has been assigned the task by the government to produce around 8,000 megawatt of nuclear electricity for catering to the enhanced needs of accelerated economic development.
He said the PAEC is successfully operating two nuclear power plants, while a third one, CHSHNUPP-2, is under construction.
“We have 35 years of safe operating experience at our credit and plans to build more nuclear power plants in the coming years to contribute to the energy requirements of the country,” he said.
“The PAEC is assisting the industry in its growth and competitive capability by providing technical services.
“The PAEC over the years has built an extensive infrastructure for contributing to the economic uplift of the country, Butt said.
The PAEC’s activities span an extremely wide spectrum — from nuclear power generation to minerals development, from developing high yield disease-resistant crops to the treatment of cancer, design and fabrication of industrial plants and equipment to human resource development, he said.
