RIYADH, 29 March 2006 — Mir Mohammed Nassiruddin, a former Bangladeshi ambassador to the Kingdom who lost three members of his family in a car accident in Madinah, left for Dhaka on Sunday with his daughter who survived the accident.
The accident took place last week when Nassiruddin and his family members, who came for Umrah, were traveling in a private car from Madinah to Jeddah. His wife Daliya Naznin died on the spot, while his sister; Shamsun Nahar succumbed to injuries in hospital. Nuzrat, 21, his daughter who was a third year medical student in the Dhaka University died after remaining unconscious for a few days following the accident.
Nassiruddin and his other daughter, Israt, 18, who were discharged from the King Fahd Hospital in Madinah, left for Dhaka. Mohammed Hilalddin, his son, who came to Jeddah after the accident accompanied Nassiruddin and Israt to Dhaka.
Nassiruddin was a former minister of civil aviation and tourism and was the mayor of Chittagong prior to his assignment as ambassador to Riyadh.
Ashraf Uddin, Bangladesh’s consul general in Jeddah, described the accident as very unfortunate. “I have personal relationship with the former envoy since I worked under him at the Riyadh mission from 1994 to 1996,” he said.
He said the driver of the car, a Bangladeshi, who escaped with minor injuries has been arrested by the police for recklessness.
