JEDDAH, 24 May 2007 — Al-Andalus Private School and Al-Aqsa Private School shared top billing at the end of the first Taekwondo and Fencing Championships for Schools. Capping the event was the awards ceremony on Tuesday at the Masters Academy for Fencing and Martial Arts.
Al-Andalus was crowned overall champion in fencing while Al-Aqsa ruled the taekwondo competition in the two-in-one meet that attracted elementary and intermediate students from government, private and international schools under the supervision of North Jeddah Educational Supervision Center and Al-Anjal Private School.
Khalid Al-Harthi, director of the organizing school, attended the closing ceremony along with the president of the Saudi Fencing Federation Bandar Al-Salih.
Dar Al-Thikr finished second to Al-Andalus. Al-Thaghur School came in third, Jeddah Private School fourth, Nahdhat Jeddah School fifth, and Al-Anjal Private School sixth. Al-Anjal Private School and Al-Thaghur School rounded out the first three winners in taekwondo.
Feras Tunsi from Jeel Al-Quran School clinched first place in the fencing foil competition in the elementary level. Second place went to Yassir Batterji from Dar Al-Thikir School, while Majid Qotub from Al-Anjal School and Muhannad Al-Kherejji from Al-Andalus School shared third place.
In epée Ahmed Faiz from Jeddah International School emerged champion followed by Ammar Batterjii from Dar Al-Thikr School. Third place went to Mohammed Sindi from Nahdhat Jeddah School and Abdulmalik Baqabas from Jeddah Private Schools.
Dar Al-Fikr’s fencer Amamr Faidah ruled the sabre event while Sami Bakhsh from Jeddah Knowledge School finished first runner-up. Hashim Baqabas from Jeddah Private School and Yousif Damanhouri from Al-Anjal School shared the third position.
In the intermediate level, Rayyan Al-Madani from Al-Andalus School won first place in the sabre followed by Ahmed Al-Awad from Al-Imam School. Amro Taha from Al-Siddique School and Ibaa Tunsi from Qurtuba School were joint third. Mohammed Taha from Al-Nahdha Private School won the epée with Mansour Sukkari from Al-Thaghar School in second. Yazan Rahal from Nahdhat Jeddah School and Nawwaf Al-Ghaithi from Al-Thagr Schoool were tied third.
In the taekwondo, the first three winners were: +51kg Mohammed Al-Humaidi, Ahmed Ghamri and Mohammed Abdulwahab; 51 kg Rakan Mahfouz, Abdulmalik Karawi and Hazim Al-Hazmi; 43kg Abdulrahman Rami, Feras Abduljawwad and Abdulrahman Smith; 37kg Nour Al-Ddin Al-Mustapha, Shahir Saud and Omar Sulaiman; 23 kg Wisam Smith, Abdulrahim Smith and Ammar Bawazir. According to academy fencing coach and sports consultant in the academy Omar Abu Rumayah the event was a big success.
