Omar Al-Anzi and Othman Al-Anzi, who are in their 30s, sustained multiple injuries in the attack.

Jordanian police have started investigations into the incident following an intervention by the Saudi Embassy in Amman, Al-Watan Arabic daily reported.

The attack took place in Irbid region, 80 km from Amman. A gang of young Jordanians attacked them, punching and kicking them.

Othman sustained a broken nose and fractured bones in his face while his brother sustained bruises to his face and other parts of his body.

Hamad Al-Hajiri, charge d'affaires at the Saudi Embassy in Amman, told the newspaper that the embassy had received a complaint from the two young men, alleging that they were brutally attacked last Friday.

“Immediately after receiving the complaint, the embassy contacted the Jordanian authorities. The embassy also sent its official in charge of the affairs of Saudi citizens to Irbid to check on the victims,” he said, adding that one of the young men underwent tests at a nearby medical center at the expense of the embassy.

“The governor and director of police in Irbid have taken the incident seriously and ordered an urgent and extensive probe into the attack,” Al-Hajiri said.

Thirty-six-year-old Omar told the newspaper that they were attacked by a gang of six Jordanians who appeared to be in their 20s.

“Together with Othman, I went out to buy dinner and some household essentials. While I was driving along the street, the young men tried to hit our car with theirs. Then they got out apparently with a plan to attack us,” he said.

“We tried to evade them and drove fast. They then got in their car and chased us. They tried to trap us on the street. When I saw the patrol police in front of a hotel, I stopped the car and Othman got out to ask them for help. One of the young men got down from their car and attacked him with heavy blows to his stomach,” he said, adding that this happened in front of the officers.

“My brother fell down and the young men rushed to attack him brutally and kicked him in his face and other parts of his body until he fainted. He was bleeding badly. They then smashed the windows of our car and beat me up too,” he said.

Omar said one of the attackers carried a steel rod in his hand and he used it to strike and break his brother’s nose. He complained that patrol policemen took only three of the attackers into custody and allowed the remaining members of the gang to escape.
