KARACHI: Pakistani stocks closed lower after a volatile session on Monday as international oil prices fell, dealers said.

The benchmark 100-share index at the Karachi Stock Exchange closed down 0.38 percent, or 137.96 points, at 36,084.67.

Oil and exploration stocks fell after crude oil futures touched multi-month lows on Monday, said Bilal Asif, head of research at Habib Financial Services.

Oil and Gas Development Co. Ltd. fell 0.95 percent to 160.50 rupees, Pakistan Petroleum Ltd. fell 0.12 percent to 153.30 rupees and Mari Petroleum Company Ltd. fell 3.02 percent to 443.97 rupees.

Engro Fertilizers Ltd. closed 0.40 percent higher at 98.90 rupees.

The day’s volume stood at 265 million shares, with the total value touching 12.5 billion rupees ($122.84 million).

The rupee was higher at 101.76/101.81 against the dollar, compared with Friday’s close of 101.78/101.83.

Overnight rates in the money market remained flat at 7 percent.
