LG Electronics is expecting huge demand in Saudi Arabia for its new flagship smartphone that saw a grand global launch in New York recently.
“We plan to sell more than 100,000 units of the LG G2 smartphone in the Kingdom,” John Lee, president of LG Electronics, Saudi Arabia, told Arab News.
“LG G2 is totally different from any other smartphone available globally,” Lee said. LG G2 smartphone will be launched in Saudi Arabia by end of September, he added.
On Aug. 7, nearly 700 guests from more than 30 countries converged on the renowned Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, for the global launch of the new LG G2 smart phone.
Based on the South Korean electronic giant’s research of consumer lifestyles and behaviors, the G2 smartphone offers its users more real life benefits, such as ergonomic design, practical functions and an intuitive user experience, Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, said in his welcome address at the global launch event.
“Our definition of innovation today is technology that truly resonates with consumers,” said the president.
“We have always listened to and learned from consumers in pursuit of innovation. We took these insights to new heights in developing LG G2, the most exciting and ambitious mobile phone in our company’s history,” Park told a packed audience at the NY launch event.
The most innovative aspect in the new mobile phone is its design, which is based on “thousands of hours” of observation of smartphone users,” said the LG chief.
“That led LG to have only one control button placed on the back right, where a user’s forefinger would rest when holding the smart phone,” he said.
Qualcomm’s President and COO Steve Mollenkopf said the LG G2 would be the first smartphone to ship with the Qualcomm 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz.
“Both Qualcomm and LG wanted to create an unparalleled experience on a smart phone. The LG G2 is the outcome of the two companies’ efforts,” he added.
“Qualcomm had one very clear objective of delivering an unparalleled experience to our smart phone users. To achieve that objective, we researched out to both the consumer and mobile use behavior. We listened to you. We learned from you and reflected your insights in our new product,” Mollenkopf stated.
While introducing the LG G2 smartphone, James Fishler, senior VP, LG Electronics USA, focused on the top five breakthroughs — design, display, camera, sound and user experience.
“So there were a few interesting features to note. However, LG was really trying to hit a grand slam homerun with their new smart phone design. They were trying to position the new design as a revolutionary one by eliminating side and top smart phone buttons with a combined super button on the rear of the smart phone where our fingers generally hang out,” he added.
The LG G2 is the first smartphone to be based on the 2.26 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with a quad Krait CPU. It has an Adreno 320 graphics processing unit and runs Android 4.2.2.
The G2 has a 13-MP front camera and a 2.1-MP rear camera. Its rear camera takes 1080p HD videos at 60 fps with 423 ppi resolution. It has optical image stabilization. The camera lenses are made from anti-smear sapphire crystal glass, which is stronger than tempered glass.
The phone’s display has a 0.1-inch bezel and about 6.2 million pixels, about 30 percent more than the roughly 4.2 million offered by full HD AMOLED screens.
Graphic RAM reduces the display’s energy consumption by up to 26 percent and increases the phone’s usage time by up to 10 percent.
The G2 has a 3,000 mAh battery, and will be available in black or white.
The LG G2 smartphone will be rolled out in over 130 wireless carriers in the next eight weeks starting with South Korea and followed by North America, Europe and other key markets.
Michael Morgan, a senior analyst at ABI Research, was quoted as saying in a recent report that LG had about 6 percent of the overall global smartphone market in Q2 and 7.5 percent of the global Android smartphone market. This placed it third overall after Apple and Samsung.
