Khalaf Ahmad Al-Habtoor, chairman of the Al-Habtoor Group, welcomed Thani Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi, the UAE’s Cabinet member and minister of climate change and environment, at the Al-Habtoor Group headquarters.
It marked the first meeting between the Al-Habtoor Group chairman and Al-Zeyoudi, who formally assumed the new role in February.
The minister briefed the chairman on the latest developments of the nation’s program, which encourages collaboration between the public and private sectors in a bid to address sustainability for future generations.
He said the focus now is on building supplies of staple crops, including wheat and rice, to secure a stable food supply for the nation’s population.
Al-Habtoor commended the achievements of the UAE government and said he is pleased to see the nation expanding its food production capacity.
“Innovation in agriculture will pave the way for prosperity and suitability for generations. As a nation, we have proven to innovate ways for coping with surviving in the desert, a harsh and arid environment. The UAE is a role model not only for our region but also globally. Food sustainability is yet another milestone as we honor the legacy and vision of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, founder of the UAE.”
Throughout the history of the UAE, the environment has been a priority, starting with the foundation of the Supreme Committee for Environment in 1975, the Federal Authority for Environment in 1993, and the Ministry of Environment and Water in 2006.
In 2016, the UAE leadership established the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to expand on the role of the Ministry of Environment and Water with a mandate to carry out all aspects related to international and domestic climate change affairs, including implementation of policies and initiatives to mitigate and adapt to climate change and protect environmental standards.
