Jilani is the convener of All India Babri Masjid Action committee, and a member of the executive committee of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
He completed his Master’s in law from AMU in 1971.
Jilani is respected in the community due to his efforts in securing for the community justice in religion, education and freedom of speech.
Jilani, who was here to perform Umrah, was invited by Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Association, Jeddah, to share his views with the community.
In a gathering of Aligarians, President Syed Farzan Rizvi welcomed Jilani, and the group’s General Secretary Aqeel Jamil highlighted Jilani’s achievements and services to the community.
Dr. Dilshad Shamsi, Khurram Ilyas and Aziz ur Rab also spoke on the occasion.
Highlighting his association with AMU, Jilani said he is proud of being an Alig, adding that Aligarh students can be counted among the best in the country, as AMU not only provides education but also teaches life lessons.
He advised Aligarians in the Kingdom to support needy students in India for education in an organized way.
Talking about Uttar Pradesh’s Babri Masjid, which was destroyed during riots in 1992, he said all concerned with the case want to do their best and leave the decision to the court.
Many prominent non-Muslim lawyers have represented the Muslim community in the court and this has enhanced the secular face of India, he claimed.
He stressed Muslims should get reasonable grants according to their population ratio and as per the recommendations of the Sachar Commission.
He appreciated the Samajwadi Party government in UP for their positive attitude toward the Muslim community’s problems.
