Western ideals

I read with interest the report “Female flight dispatchers doing Saudi Arabia proud” (April 27). There is a great need for highlighting such reports. People outside Saudi Arabia have very wrong perceptions about the womenfolk in the Kingdom. Those perceptions are formed by the biased media portrayal of Saudi Arabia. People in the West should try to understand that the western social and political ideals are not universal in nature. Those ideals may have worked in the West but it is not necessary that they could prove equally effective in other parts of the world.
There is another point that is usually ignored by most commentators and analysts. Countries in the Middle East gained independence from the colonial rule just a few decades ago. When it comes to a nation or a country, a few decades mean nothing. Even in a relatively short span, many Gulf countries have progressed by leaps and bounds and from a materialistic point of view many are in a position to compete with many western countries.
