For the first time since the introduction of executive presidency in Sri Lanka, hope of ridding the country of this oppressive system has emerged. Undoubtedly, this system is a major hurdle in achieving a true, realistic and thriving democracy.
Last five candidates who contested the presidential elections had promised to curtail the powers of the president and to limit his term but none of them delivered on their promises. However, the current president kept his promise.
Now, there would not be any extension to the tenure of a president. An elected president could occupy the position only for two terms. We thank the new president for keeping up his promise he made during the election. — S.H. Moulana, Riyadh
