Due to the ongoing unrest in the Middle East, the Palestinian issue has taken a backseat. Israel must be having a field day, as it is no longer in the global spotlight. According to media reports, former US President Jimmy Carter visited the occupied territories and expressed sorrow over the plight of the Gazans. It is very interesting that as long as the US presidents are in office, they don’t take any meaningful step toward the resolution of this lingering issue. After retirement, however, they become very actively involved in the Middle East and keep shuttling between countries for the “resolution” of the mother of all issues in the region.
I am sure that US President Barack Obama after leaving the White House will don the mantle of yet another Mideast peace envoy and give lectures on the importance of the resolution of this issue. — Tariq Hadi, Riyadh
