This is with reference to the report “Gulf sectarian divide ‘will just remain Daesh dream’” (June 29). The attack on a mosque in Kuwait is condemnable. One thing has become clear that Daesh and its “supporters” are employing dirty tricks to drive a wedge between Sunnis and Shiites otherwise living peacefully with each other in the Gulf countries. I have this very strong feeling that the sectarian agenda of Daesh and certain regional forces will produce an unexpected result in the Muslim world.
During the past few months, in the wake of any attack on a Shiite mosque the Sunni population reached out to their brothers and extended a helping hand to them. This is a very positive thing. Now, people are openly calling for sectarian harmony. Muslims have realized that Daesh and its likes are puppets in the hands of some global and regional powers working to change the geography of the region. These forces will never succeed in their diabolical designs.
It seems that Daesh and Iran are working on the same agenda but using different tactics. Stoking sectarian tensions in the Muslim world will only serve their interests. The former is trying to portray itself as the representative of Sunnis and the latter is making all-out efforts to portray itself as the sole protectors of Shiites.
We must not forget that action speaks louder than words. Iranian meddling in Iraq has pushed this once great country to the verge of disintegration. Those Shiite Iraqis who have been duped into believing that Iran wants to save Iraqi Shiites will soon realize their folly and that is not going to take much time. As for Daesh, this brutal organization’s true intentions are crystal clear. They kill those people who oppose their skewed ideology without any consideration. The question is how to deal with these forces.
It is heartening to note that despite repeated attempts to stoke sectarian unrest, people did not respond to their call. This is a very positive development that should be cherished and steps should be taken all across the Muslim world to open channels between leaders of the two communities so as to thwart the attempts of anti-Islam forces. — Lala, Jeddah
