I read with interest the article “Democracy by referendum” by Bernard-Henri Levy (July 10). I feel disgusted by such pseudo intellectuals who prefer to turn a blind eye to the problems facing the masses. The ideals of democracy or other forms of governance should be seen as ways to address the problems of a group of people. There should be flexibility in manmade philosophies so as to help those stay relevant. The situation of Greece is complex. People had started committing suicides and our great intellectual is mourning the demise of democratic ideals. Laws and rules are made to serve human interests. In certain situations, we can show little flexibility in the greater good of the masses. — Farhan Raza, Dammam
