It was very disturbing to know that the number of people with mental health issues or depression is increasing in Saudi Arabia. “Depression the silent killer needs addressing.” (July 30)
The reasons cited for the malaise include marital relationship as also increasing urbanization. Not being able to keep up with rapid progress was also cited as possible but ridiculous reason. I am surprised because in Islam one is in peace of mind.
But if such a situation prevails in the Kingdom, the government needs to address it on a priority basis. And more than psychiatrists, the society needs expert sociologists who can come up with accurate analyses as to why depression is increasing.
Definitely disturbed or broken marital ties are one of the reasons, as we see many Saudi women remaining at home without marriage or due to failed marriage. This is also to do with social evils like dowry system that is making many boys to look for girls outside the Saudi society.
If such anomalies are corrected, there is no reason why the people here who are guided by Islamic principles become free from depression. — Ateequr Rahman, Makkah
