A new Syria

The article “Hopes for a new Syria” (Dec. 1) by Abdulrahman Al-Rashed makes perfect sense. The writer has correctly pointed out that the upcoming Riyadh conference will pave the way for creating a united front capable of leading a new Syria without extremism. Riyadh’s efforts to bring about peace in Syria will always be remembered in the history of mankind. Since the beginning of Syrian crisis, Riyadh has been stressing the need to do away with Bashar Assad’s regime. Unfortunately, the international players did not heed Saudi advices and now the entire world is paying the price in the form of emergence of Daesh and Syrian refugees. Had the world acted promptly, Daesh would not have been able to gain a foothold in war-ravaged Syria.

Western leaders don’t have any right to criticize the growing number of Syrian refugees. They have created the problem and it is their moral responsibility to allow Syrians entry into their countries. The western powers should also try to stop meddling in the Middle East and other parts of the world. — Hari Shankar, Jubail
