Social inequality

This is with reference to the report “With future dark in Sweden, he saw ray of light in Daesh” (April 11). This report should be sufficient enough to understand the reasons behind the successful recruitment drive of Daesh. Like any other terrorist organization, Daesh is also exploiting social inequality to find recruits in Europe and elsewhere.

Even in the Muslim countries, most of the people who are easily “brainwashed” are those who don’t get any opportunities in life. It is an important issue and the entire world needs to take important measures to address this problem. It is going to take some time before the situation is brought completely under control but urgent measures for the uplift of Muslim migrants in the West, particularly Europe, should be taken to prevent Daesh from exploiting the situation. As for the Muslim world, it may not be possible to take similar measures due to economic issues but a strategy is needed to empower the marginalized segments of society.

In addition to that scholars and intellectuals in the Muslim world should wage an intellectual battle to counter Daesh’s ideology.

The problem may be the same but the plan of action should be vary from country to country. It should mainly be based on the ground situation. — Ali Haider, Riyadh
