This is in reference to Stanley A. Mayadunne’s letter “India lets down Sri Lanka” Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. International responsibilities and regional politics have put India in a catch-22 position. One of its ally, DMK, in the coalition walked out from the government alleging that India water downed the resolution, helping Sri Lanka get away from strong condemnation it deserves from the world community.
The government now survives with the help of two opposing parties SP and BSP, which are at loggerheads with the federal government. The beauty of coalition, the danger of coalition and the absurdity of the coalition all are manifested in the present Indian United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. India is facing the ire of Sri Lankan government for supporting the resolution.
Mayadunne’s anger at India and his suggestions to scrap all relations with India are knee-jerk reactions of people who don’t realize the politics of the region. Is this resolution — which was passed in the UN Human Rights Council — something that would isolate Sri Lanka from international arena? Sri Lanka has already rejected the resolution.
If the UN resolutions are anything to be considered so seriously, Israel would have been a good boy by now. So cheer up, it’s another one from the UN that helps its member states feel they are functioning. — Ansar, Jazan
