The water crisis in Jeddah has reached an impasse, prompting the National Commission for Human Rights (NSHR) to perform surprise visits to the city’s major water supplying center.
Hussein Al-Sharief, the supervisor general of the NSHR branch in Makkah Province said the commission is planning to embark on arbitrary and unplanned visits to Al-Aziziyah water supply center to uncover the reasons behind their failure to meet the residents’ water needs.
“The people’s demands are genuine and therefore it is our duty to perform field visits to learn about the situation at the water supplying center,” he said, adding, that the NSHR has been increasingly noticing that the water crisis has been occurring more frequently.
He revealed that this issue has been raised to NSHR’s attention through the local media reports and complaints received from citizens.
“Our visiting team will meet the center’s officials and then proceed through the legal channels to end this crisis. If all recourse fails, we will file a report to the provincial governorate and request the local authorities to address the matter urgently,” Al-Sharief said in a statement.
He emphasized the need to establish a time frame to resolve the issue and explained that the NSHR plans to initiate more visits to the water supplying company to monitor the extent to which the center has made improvements.
In an earlier statement, Abdullah Al-Assaf director general of the National Water Company in Jeddah said citizens have the right to seek the help of the NSHR in probing the issues facing the Al-Aziziyah water supply center.
However, previously he had attributed the cause of the crisis to some emergency repair works at the Al-Shuaibah Desalination Plant, which supplies water to the Al-Aziziyah center.
