Following an increase in fuel-smuggling operations thwarted by authorities recently, the Finance Ministry has imposed strict measures on preventing such operations across border outlets.
Among these measures is the registering of the name of drivers leaving the country and other information about the vehicles they drive, mainly those drivers who frequently cross the border several times a day.
The measurements were directed at Saudi Customs in particular, stating that officials of the department should thoroughly inspect all travel gear on the vehicle, and ensuring that the driver should have only the amount of fuel needed for his journey.
Among such measures is one that stipulates registering the reading on the fuel meter of drivers who enter the Kingdom several times a day.
This comes in the wake of the increased influx of vehicles crossing the border, noted recently by the control and inspection team in Saudi Customs. These vehicles, large ones especially, fill more than their share of fuel from Saudi petrol stations in order to sell or store it, taking advantage of the difference in price.
The difference in fuel prices and the high price of fuel in neighboring countries, has created a widespread trade of fuel on the borders between Saudi Arabia and Jordan by city residents and governorates located near these borders, mainly Saudi Arabia’s Hakel and Jordan’s Aqaba.
