Abdullatif Al-Othman, governor and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA), has announced that King Abdullah Economic City’s port in Rabiagh will commence operations by the end of this year.
“The major developer of the port and the International Shipping Liner have agreed on gradually receiving 1.7 million TEUs (a twenty-foot equivalent unit, a measure used for container transportation capacity), toward the end of this year,” said Al-Othman, following his inspection tour of Jeddah Islamic Port, in which he was accompanied by Saudi Customs officials and members of the port’s administration.
Al-Othman stressed the need to exchange experiences and expertise between the various government agencies, the Public Port Authority and the developers of King Abdullah Economic City’s port.
The governor pointed out to the port’s importance in light of its strategic location and its particularly pivotal role in the success of King Abdullah Economic City.
“The joint efforts of the port’s administration, Saudi Customs and the relevant government agencies is yielding positive results, which is a reflection of stakeholder cooperation and the benefits reaped from the Jeddah Islamic Port’s experience, the oldest port in the Kingdom and in neighboring countries,” he added.
The “Ports Development Company”, a Saudi company that was founded by an alliance between Saudi Bin Laden Group and Emaar Economic City, is developing the port in King Abdullah Economic City.
