A special court in Riyadh has sentenced eight defendants from among a 12-member cell to different prison terms, ranging between four months and eight years, on terror charges.
According to the initial verdicts announced by the court, the first defendant was given five years in prison, the second 14 months, the third seven years, the fourth six years, the sixth four years, the seventh four months, the ninth two years and the 12th eight years.
The first defendant was charged with sympathizing and joining deviants through online forums used to debase governors, scholars and support acts of sabotage both inside and outside the Kingdom, including the attempted assassination of the then assistant interior minister for security affairs, in addition to his support of Al-Qaeda rhetoric and possession of computerized documents on how to make explosives.
The second defendant was charged with possession of computerized documents detrimental to the security of the Kingdom.
The third, fourth, sixth and 12th defendants were indicted for their support of deviant groups, their knowledge of the attempted assassination of the then assistant interior minister for security affairs and fatwa of an Al-Qaeda mufti on the killing of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah.
The ninth defendant was convicted of communicating with a member of an Al-Qaeda group in Yemen through mobile phone and e-mail and his attempts to collect money for the group.
The court found no clear-cut proof of the seventh and 11th defendants funding terrorist activities and therefore ordered four months in prison for the former and banned the latter from traveling.
