Adam Kulach, EU Ambassador in Riyadh inaugurated a week-long photography exhibition on “Europe seen by Gulf students” to mark the ‘Europe Day’ at the National Museum at the King Abduaziz Historical Center in Riyadh on Wednesday.
The colorful event was attended by Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister for Protocol Affairs Alauddin Al-Askary and Deputy Minister for planning and information at the ministry of culture and information Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Mulhem.
Kulach said that a total of 55 photos have been displayed at the show. “They were selected from several hundred submissions that were made by students from GCC countries currently residing in Europe,”he added.
The works of the participants were screened by two celebrated GCC artists, Abdulnasir Gharem from Saudi Arabia and Thuraya Albaqsami from Kuwait.
The seven-day show is being held at the National Museum at the King Abdulaziz Historical Center in the capital. He also thanked the center and the Saudi Commission For Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) for the support extended to hold the show in Riyadh.
“The event is part of the internationally recognized celebration of Europe Day on May 9 every year, under the banner of Europe Month, which takes place annually during May,” Kulach said, adding that the European Union celebrates this event under the European Union’s official motto: “United in Diversity.”
The relationship between the EU and the GCC is governed by a Cooperation Agreement signed in 1988. A Joint Action Program agreed in 2010 for the period 2010 to 2013 has further intensified the cooperation. Nearly 1.8 percent of EU imports originate from the GCC. Around 5.3 percent of EU exports go to the GCC region (2009).
The EU is the first trading partner for the GCC with 57.866 MEuro of exports to the GCC and 21.849 MEuro of imports from the GCC in 2009.
The Regional delegation of the EU in Riyadh which is accredited to Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, was established in 2004. It covers bilateral relations between the EU and the Gulf countries as well as relations between the EU and the GCC countries.
