Summer touch rugby to kick off in Dubai

The range of sports on offer in Dubai has reached new heights with the launch of the first indoor summer touch rugby competition, which kicks off at Dubai Sports World on July 11.
Jointly organized by Promoseven Sports Marketing and the UAE Rugby Federation, the competition is the first time touch rugby has been offered in this format as part of the Dubai Sports World summer indoor sport program, and gives rugby players and enthusiasts the opportunity to stay fit and improve their skills during summer.
Organizer Donal Kilalea, managing director of Promoseven Sports Marketing, is anticipating a high level of interest in the competition, saying “Rugby is so popular in the UAE that we believe this initiative will be well supported, and will become a regular addition to the activities on offer indoors over summer”.
“Teams of all standards are invited to enter, and we will grade them to ensure all entrants have an enjoyable and challenging experience”, he added.
Touch rugby requires speed, agility, ball handling skills and teamwork. Rather than tackling, players have to touch the opposing player in possession of the ball. The matches are played on a half size pitch and will played as two 15 minute halves with a 2 minute break at halftime. A squad of ten can be nominated each week, with six players are on the field at a time and multiple substitutions allowed. The competition will cater for anyone over 18 interested in rugby, with entry open to teams, clubs and individuals of all standards.
The competition will run in a round robin format for four weeks and will be conducted each Thursday from 8-11 pm, starting on July 11 with finals on Aug. 1. Anyone interested in entering a team should fill in the entry form which can be found on the Promoseven Sports Marketing Facebook page, Promoseven-Sports-Marketing. Entries are now being accepted.
