There has been a series of comments and criticisms against Pakistan on the killing of foreign tourists in Nanga Parbat. Pakistan is being blatantly blamed for the carnage without realizing that incidents like Nanga Parbat are not unique to Pakistan only. Such incidents can and do take place and other parts of the world too.
The Nanga Parbat incident is an isolated case wherein foreign climbers came under attack for the first time
Over 300 foreigners are still in Gilgit-Baltistan(GB) and they have full faith in Pakistan, as the country it is fully committed to protect them. Even people of Gilgit-Baltistan have condemned this act of terrorism, unique in its nature, in history of Gilgit-Baltistan. The civil society of Gilgit-Baltistan has strongly protested against this act of terrorism and demonstrated firm resolve to support the national cause of protecting foreign travelers from terrorists. We must understand that terrorism knows no boundaries and terrorists have no faith and religion. They are enemies of humanity and peace.
Pakistan is itself a victim of terrorism and has suffered enormous loss, both in terms of human lives and material. Since the incidents of 9/11, Pakistan has been a frontline ally in the war against terrorism. Pakistan has lost no less than 40,000 countrymen including security personnel.
Pakistan is a key partner in the global war against terrorists and deserves world acknowledgement and support. Given the odd threats from terrorists, such incidents could not stop the government and the people of Pakistan from holding general elections that resulted in the smooth transition of power.
The world must appreciate the fact that a few hard-liners can’t be bracketed with the overwhelming majority of a peace-loving nation.
The world community needs to share the burden of terrorism with Pakistan and help it in combating the menace of terrorism. — Aamna Kahloon, by e-mail
