SCTA attends 20th General Assembly of UNWTO

A Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) delegation is taking part in the 20th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which is under way through Thursday at a resort near Victoria Falls on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, in southern Africa.
Represented by the SCTA, Saudi Arabia is a member of World Tourism Organization.
The meeting will discuss issues related to the growing tourism sector, the most important of which is the status of the world tourism sector, tourism on the international agenda, tourism’s contribution to sustainable poverty reduction, including the appointment of the new Secretary-General of WTO for 2014-2017, election of new members of the executive council. It will review of projects and new resolutions adopted at the 20th session of the General Assembly, the SCTA said.
The assembly is also set to discuss a number of issues related to the role of World Tourism Organization under the umbrella of United Nations.
The ongoing session will be held in conjunction with the 96th and 97th sessions of the Executive Council of the WTO.
An active member of the world tourism organization, Saudi Arabia has significant role in transforming the organization into an international agency specializing in the field of tourism under the United Nations. In addition, it has a key role in including the Arabic language among the official languages of the United Nations.
The Kingdom is also a member of a number of administrative arms of the World Tourism Organization, including the executive council, the Middle East committee, budget and program committee and the statistics tourism sub account committee.
Earlier, Saudi Arabia had hosted a number of regional seminars in cooperation with the World Tourism Organization and also in conjunction with the WTO and ILO (International Labor Organization).
SCTA has recently concluded an international study on the role of tourism in the economic development of the communities in Saudi Arabia.
