The Criminal Investigation Department in Jeddah has apprehended a 12-member teen gang, which was allegedly involved in 30 robberies of houses, stores and cars.
First Lt. Nawwaf Al-Bouq, a spokesman for the Jeddah Police Department, said that the department formed a special security team under the supervision of Maj. Gen. Abdullah Al-Qahtani, chief of Jeddah Police.
The members of the gang were of African descent and all of them were in their teens. “We are still in the process of electronically comparing their fingerprints to ascertain the perpetrators of other offenses. They would break down doors using a metal lever and sometimes break into houses through light holes or a staircase,” he said.
“We interrogated suspects at the police station. We took their statements and confessions. They admitted the locations where the crimes took place. The cases will be referred to the courts for further action,” he said.
“I would like to reiterate that the Jeddah Police Department is always on the lookout for criminals and we take reports or tips seriously.
There is a strong legal framework that guarantees peoples’ rights and safety. I urge members of the public to report cases of theft or robbery no matter how small so we can hold criminals accountable,” he said.
“Jeddah Police captured them in downtown Jeddah. Members of this gangs, mostly teenagers from African countries, have systemically robbed houses and stores in Jeddah. The police monitored them before making the arrest,” Al-Bouq told Arab News.
