These days most of the Pakistanis are talking about reviewing Pakistan’s ties with the United States. Even are seasoned politicians are calling for a review of our ties with the US. But I am sure that they are merely paying a lip service in the aftermath of the drone strike that is being dubbed as an attempt to sabotage the peace talks with Taleban.
Had our politicians been sincere, they would have taken action against these drone attacks long ago. The truth is that our politicians are only interested in staying in power and bother the least about the country and its citizens. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had during his election campaigns pledged to take action against the drone attacks. It is time for him to back his words by actions.
To prove to his voters and Pakistani’s at large that his tall claims were not an attempt to woo the masses to gain power. If he was sincere, he should act now. I would like to clear one thing that Pakistanis do not consider slain Taleban leader Hakimullah Mehsud a hero or a holy warrior. To us, he was a terrorist and a hardened criminal. We are protesting the US drone strike mainly due to its timing. The attack was carried out at a time when the Pakistan government was moving closer to start a peace process that could have brought stability to the country.
It is time for us to see which Pakistani politicians will stand for us. — Naheed Zaidi, Riyadh
