The Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation has donated $1 million (SR3.75 million) to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Philippines, said Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the foundation's chairman, on Tuesday.
He made the donation in collaboration with the National Risk Reduction and Management Council, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Program. The aid supports the victims of the tragedy to help rebuild their homes and lives.
The Alwaleed Foundation has supported the Philippines in previous years. In 2009, the foundation gave the country a donation for medical aid for the victims of Typhoon Ketsana. The foundation also supported the Muslim Mindanao Integrated Higher Development Center in the Philippines for capacity building, research and scholarships.
The Philippine government has awarded the prince its highest national honor, the Order of the Golden Heart with the rank of Grand Officer. In 2011, Prince Alwaleed met with Jejomar C. Binay, vice president of the Philippines, and an accompanying delegation, at his office in Riyadh.
The foundation is involved in a wide spectrum of humanitarian and philanthropic activities in more than 80 countries. The main focus areas have been established around strategic initiatives including disaster relief, community development, empowerment of women and youth, and promoting intercultural understanding.
