Staff tackle ‘serious disturbance’ at British prison

LONDON: Staff at a British prison were on Sunday trying to contain an “ongoing incident,” the security firm that manages the facility said, with media reporting a “serious disturbance.”
“We can confirm that there is an ongoing incident taking place on a wing at Oakwood prison,” a G4S statement said.
“The situation is contained and we are applying standard procedures to manage the incident.”
British media said a “serious disturbance” had broken out at the prison near Wolverhampton, central England, which was the scene of a number of rooftop protests last year.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said the incident was being dealt with solely by prison staff.
The privately run prison houses category C male prisoners, who are defined as those who cannot be trusted in open conditions but are not considered capable of escape.
The official prison inspector criticized the jail following a surprise inspection in October 2013, highlighting high levels of violence and drug dealing.
