Young and old Saudis and expatriates are flocking to the award-winning 1,001 Inventions exhibition here showcasing major technological advances made by Muslim scientists during Islam’s Golden Age.
The exhibition opened on Jan. 15 under the umbrella of Saudi Aramco’s iThra (Richness) Knowledge Program at its training center in Briman, Jeddah.
Abdul Lateef Jameel Community Initiatives and the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilization were also part of the organizing team. The aim of the initiative is to inspire young people to pursue careers in science and technology. It has hi-tech games and interactive displays about Muslim scientists from the 7th century onwards.
Ahmed Bakashwain, who is in charge of the event, said the exhibition emphasizes the significance of Muslim scientific inventions during the Middle Ages, stretching from Spain to China.
Visitors can watch a documentary entitled “1,001 Inventions — The Library of Secrets,” which is a 15-minute movie of significant scientific advances featuring Oscar-winning actor Ben Kingsley, who plays the role of 13th century engineer, Al-Jazari.
Mohammed F. Khoja, communication representative of Saudi Aramco, said: “This exhibition helps to educate and inform the youth about past achievements and the rich scientific and technological heritage worldwide. Such initiatives inspire and instruct them and it’s an effort to support the country’s mission towards building a knowledge society.”
Sara Hyat, a high school student, said she read a book about Muslim inventors and always wanted to see an exhibition of their work. “I’m so happy the exhibition has been organized in Jeddah.”
Saleha Fatima, a housewife, said: “I’ve been there with my children and it was an amazing experience for them and me. The place is full of information and quite enjoyable.”
