A secondary school in Al-Kharj has turned its premises into an evening ladies club for sports, scientific and cultural activities.
The move has come despite a recent decision issued by the Education Department banning sports in the Kingdom’s schools.
A teacher at the eighth public secondary school in Al-Kharj said the club serves four neighborhoods.
“The activities begin at 5 p.m. and last until 8 p.m.,” said one teacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Activities will be supervised by teachers at the school. The club is equipped with machines and other resources.”
“The club will offer free-of-charge make-up and photography courses,” she said.
“Only female secondary students will be allowed to participate in these activities, which will be held within the walls of a closed sports hall,” the teacher told local media. “Participants should be dressed decently.”
“Sports are still prohibited in girls’ school, but other activities, such as cultural and theatrical events, are allowed,” said Zaid Al-Julaifi, general director of education in Al-Kharj
“We are keen on creating neighborhood clubs to serve residents,” he said. “A certain budget has been allocated for such activities and events, as well as courses and seminars for self-development, talent discovery, scientific research and public health.”
