A medical team at the Dammam Medical Complex (DMC) has successfully carried out the first bone-anchored hearing transplant case, sabq.org reported.
The medical team transplanted the hearing device into a 31-year-old female Saudi patient who was suffering from medium-severity hearing weakness, the paper said.
Commenting on the medical breakthrough, Dr. Yasir Al-Nifaili, ENT consultant at DMC, said the patient could use the bone-conduction hearing device two weeks after the operation. The BIA 400 technology has proved efficient in cases of hearing impairment, he said.
He said this kind of operation was recently introduced in the Kingdom and was conducted on patients who are over the age of five, but could be done on two-week old infants without surgical intervention.
He said the “BIA”-based bone-conducting earphone amplifies sound more effectively than conventional medical headsets and delivers sound directly to the cochlea.
