MUMBAI: Two witnesses have identified actor Salman Khan in 2002 Mumbai’s hit-and-run case. Muslim Sheikh and Munnu Khan told the court that the drunk actor was behind the wheel.
In September 2002, Khan was allegedly driving a Toyota Land Cruiser that ran over a group of people sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra.
Retrial in the case was ordered in December last year
Khan was so drunk that he fell down, then got up and ran away from where his car ran over a group of people, testified a survivor in court on Tuesday. The actor was present for the hearing in a Mumbai court.
A second witness said that he saw Khan getting out from the driver’s side of the Toyota Land Cruiser; the actor’s lawyers have argued for nearly a decade that he was not at the wheel. One person was killed and four others were injured in the accident. The retrial had begun on April 29 with the partial deposition of one witness.
On Dec. 5 last year, the court had ordered a fresh trial after charges against the actor were enhanced to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
If the court convicts Khan, then he could be in jail for upto 10 years.
