Time for India, Pakistan to make peace

This is with reference to the report “Sharif, Modi to break the ice” (May 25). The SAARC member countries must be extremely pleased to see the two important members of the organization finally meeting in New Delhi.
Despite rumors doing the rounds about Pakistan Army’s “displeasure,” Sharif responded to Modi’s invitation in a very positive manner. I believe that the armed forces of any country should not go beyond their original role enshrined in their respective constitutions.
Involvement of the armed forces in civilian matters hampers the growth of a country. Civilian matters should be left to the elected governments, which usually use diplomacy instead of wars or confrontations to settle issues with neighboring countries.
The improvement of relations between these two important members of the SAARC will help the region make giant strides and will benefit all member countries.
It is high time the two countries buried the hatchet for the welfare of their respective countrymen.
We hope that the two nuclear powers will make all necessary attempts to iron out differences and to move forward. Our hopes are strengthened due to the fact that it will be a one-on-one meeting without any fake brokers.
We appeal to Sharif and Modi not to disappoint millions of Indians, Pakistanis as well as SAARC citizens waiting anxiously for the good news of an encouraging declaration. We wish both the leaders good luck. — S.H. Moulana, Riyadh
